Detoxification – A Great Way to Get Your Health Back on Track

stock-photo-14292344-raw-foodWith the festive season in full swing, undertaking a detoxification program is probably the last thing on your mind right now! But with a new year just around the corner, keep it in mind as a fantastic way to kick start 2013 and get your health on the right track for a great year ahead.

What are toxins?

A toxin is a substance (e.g. synthetic chemical) that is harmful to the body. In today's industrialised world we are exposed to an increasing number of toxins. Examples of toxins that we may come into frequent contact with include air pollution, radiation (e.g. from mobile phones, x-rays, air travel), heavy metals (e.g. from amalgam fillings), pesticides sprayed on our foods, cigarette smoke, chemicals found in cleaning products, perfumes, deodorants and make-up. Also included are dietary toxins from excess alcohol, sugar, caffeine, additives, preservatives, processed foods, junk food, saturated fats, not to mention the toxins created in our bodies from stress.

Why Detox?

When the toxic load is too heavy our organs of detoxification (such as the liver and kidneys) struggle to keep up which can result in increased free radicals and oxidative stress which is damaging to the body. Toxins can accumulate in tissues such as fat cells and have ongoing negative effects on our health. So if you are bothered by some of the symptoms below on a regular basis, detoxification can go a long way towards reducing such symptoms and to helping you achieve a greater sense of health and vitality.

What are the Symptoms of Toxicity?

Common symptoms of toxicity include;

  • Recurrent headaches
  • Unexplained fatigue and lethargy
  • Anxiety & irritability
  • Cognitive impairment – e.g. foggy brain, poor memory and concentration
  • Lowered immune function
  • Skin eruptions such as pimples and itchy skin
  • Sore muscles & aching joints
  • Chronic mucous production and stuffy nose
  • Bloating, constipation, indigestion and bad breath

What is involved in a Detoxification program?

Put simply, detoxification is the process of cleansing the body of accumulated toxins. Detoxing programs can vary enormously and many involve a period of fasting or a set number of days on just fruit and or vegetable juice. Detoxing doesn't have to be complicated and difficult to follow, the programs that I offer do not involve fasting and are essentially based on the following;

Avoiding/Reducing exposure to toxins

Elimination of dietary and lifestyle toxins

(e.g. caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, recreational drugs, sugar, refined carbohydrates, saturated fats)

Very Clean Diet:

emphasis is on a very clean "detox" diet that is high in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, clean and lean protein, some grains (e.g. brown rice and buckwheat), and plenty of clean filtered water. I provide easy to follow diet sheets that list the foods to enjoy and the foods to avoid during the detoxification.

Quality herbal, nutrient and probiotic supplements

That aid your body's ability to cleanse, detoxify and repair. The length of detox programs can vary – I offer programs that range from 2 to 6 weeks. Programs are structured but also tailored to individual needs.

What can I expect from a Detoxification Program?

How will I feel? Because there is no fasting in the programs that I offer, you can carry on as normal. Most patients will begin to feel improved energy and general health fairly soon after commencing the detox program, however a few patients may experience some symptoms such as nausea or fatigue depending on the level of accumulated toxins in the body. By the end of the detox program most people feel very well, are more energetic and have a reduction in many of their original symptoms. Weight loss often also occurs due to the very healthy and well balanced detoxification diet.
